Cape Town - With unfancied Baroka FC sitting atop the Absa Premiership, winger Richard Matloga has revealed the impact former Kaizer Chiefs star Doctor Khumalo has had on the club.

Khumalo joined the Limpopo-based outfit as technical director after more than 30 years at Naturena as player and later a coach, and his arrival has been credited to Bakgakga's emergence from relegation candidates last season to potential title contenders.

"Doctor has brought that winning mentality and since he arrived, everyone is working harder," winger Matloga was quoted by Sowetan Live on Wednesday. He added, however, that Khumalo was "not that much involved" in training.

"He watches us train, but the coach is the one who does the most work," he said.

On the importance of coach Kgologo Thobejane, Matloga said his team-mates were happy to play under him.

"He wants us to attack more. As they say, the best way to defend is to attack and that's his tactic. He likes keeping it simple," Matloga said.

"He's a happy man who wants his players to be happy. The players are more than happy to work under him."

Baroka have started the new campaign in impressive fashion and have scored 11 goals so far from their seven games, and currently lead fellow unfancied Golden Arrows by two points.

Their first league encounter after the international break will be a top-of-the-table clash against Abafana Bes'thende on October 18.
