Mashego sends Sundowns through

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns scored in added time to secure progression to the first round of the CAF Champions League with a 2-1 aggregate win over Chicken Inn.

Sundowns picked up where they left off in the first leg and Khama Billiat came close to opening the scoring, forcing the Chicken Inn goalkeeper into a spectacular save with a fierce effort from range.

The Brazilians finally broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Arendse nodded home a cross after being picked out unmarked at the far post.

There was a massive scare for Downs just before the break when Michelle Katswairo cracked an effort off the post after he had gone past Denis Onyango.

Right after the break, Anthony Laffor hit the sidenetting after a decent attacking move in the 50th minute, before Leandro Castro also missed a chance six minutes later.

Laffor was in the action again minutes later when he missed another brilliant scoring opportunity.

And with the tie set for extra time, Sundowns were handed a gift when Billiat was brought crashing down in the area.

Mashego stepped up from the spot and fired home into the bottom right-hand corner to seal the win in the third minute of injury time.

Mamelodi Sundowns will now face a tie against Congolese side AC Leopards in the next round of the competition.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
