Maritzburg swoop for Cameroon striker

Cape Town - Maritzburg United have made a statement of intent with the signing of Cameroon international forward Yazid Atouba.

The 24-year-old arrives from Democratic Republic of Congo club AS Vita, and previously played for Chicago Fire in America's top flight, as well as for Cameroon giants Canon Yaounde and Coton Sport.

"The Team of Choice are proud to announce the signing of Cameroon International marksman Yazid Emane Atouba ahead of the close of the transfer window on Thursday night," the club announced.

Atouba, who scored for Vita against Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League, has five senior international caps and two goals to his name.

The Team of Choice, who finished seventh last season, have also signed Ghana international goalkeeper Richard Ofori as well as Siyanda Xulu, Mxolisi Kunene, Liam Youlley, Motsie Matima, Rushine De Reuck and Jethren Barr.

Meanwhile Maritzburg have been quick out of the starting blocks this season, and the international break will give them a chance to start all over, according to coach Fadlu Davids.

The Team of Choice find themselves at the top of the Premiership table, and in an encouraging position ahead of their MTN8 semi-final, second-leg clash against SuperSport United.

But Davids has urged his players to switch off for a few days before they prepare to welcome Matsatsantsa to the Harry Gwala Stadium.
