Maritzburg snatch late point against Stars

Cape Town - Kurt Lentjies scored a late goal from a penalty-kick rebound for Maritzburg United to force a 1-1 draw against Free State Stars at the James Motlatsi Stadium on Saturday.

The match came to life in the second half, with Goodman Dlamini opening the scoring for Stars in the 54th minute.

However in a furious finish, Maritzburg snatched a late point through Kurt Lentjies, who had his spot kick saved but reacted quickly to bury the rebound in the 84th minute.

Stars played with better fluidity than in their previous games since the return of coach Giovanni Solinas. Playing at home in front of their supporters, Ea Lla Koto entered the encounter in pursuit of their first win of the season.

Stars striker Moeketsi Sekola could have scored in the 22nd minute but his attempt was wide of the target. Maritzburg midfielder Kurt Lentjies was the anchorman for his team but he found it difficult to spray those passes to unlock the Stars defence.

After an evenly matched first half, the home team came out strong in the second half to grab the lead in the 54th minute through a Goodman Dlamini strike.

The Team of Choice fought hard to get back into the game, but the Stars defence held firm. With Stars seemingly headed for the win, the Team of Choice threw men into attack to get the equalizer.

In the 82nd minute Davis Nkausu conceded a penalty for handling the ball inside the box. Lentjies equalized for Maritzburg from his rebound after goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni had stopped his first penalty attempt.
