Maritzburg down Ajax to boost survival bid

Pietermaritzburg - Thamsanqa Mkhize scored an 85th minute winner as Maritzburg United boosted their hopes of Absa Premiership survival with a 1-0 win over 10-man Ajax Cape Town at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday.

Victory moves the Team of Choice up to 15th place on the log standings - the relegation playoff spot - with one game remaining. AmaTuks slipped to 16th following a 2-2 draw in Polokwane.

Maritzburg now know that if they beat Jomo Cosmos next week they will secure their place in South Africa's top flight for another season.

Chances were few and far between with both goalkeepers hardly tested throughout the 90 minutes.

The Urban Warriors were dealt a major blow in the 72nd minute after Abbubaker Mobara received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Maritzburg capitalised on their man advantage with five minutes remaining. Mkhize curled a free-kick past Brandon Peterson to relegate AmaTuks to the bottom of the standings.
