Lebese penalty gives Chiefs victory

Cape Town - Highlands Park suffered a first defeat in their 2016/17 Absa Premiership campaign after losing 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs at Makhulong Stadium on Wednesday night.

Amakhosi scored the goal in the second stanza through a penalty from George Lebese. In the wake of the defeat, the Lions of the North now sit at number 10 with three points from their win over Baroka FC last week.

Good attacking football was displayed by both sides in the first 10 minutes and winger Franklin Cale was set free in the box from a cross on the right, but his shot went straight to goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Amakhosi displayed good touches in the middle of the park moving forward and were rewarded with a free kick, but keeper Tapuwa Kapini punched away Lebese's delivery in the 18th minute.

Towards the 30th minute, Collins Mbesuma received a pin point cross from Cale down the left flank, the Zambian rose well above Sibusiso Khumalo only to see his header over the crossbar.

Khune and Kapini made all the difference in the match as Khune collected another fine set piece from Cale with four minutes to go to the interval.

The visitors enjoyed ball possession upon their return from the tunnel and they were awarded a set piece in the 52nd minute which failed to yield a good result.

Chiefs continued their dominance and Auguston Leonard unfairly challenged William Twala in the box, the referee gave a penalty in the 64th minute.

Lebese took it and the left footed winger converted from the spot to hand Chiefs the deserved lead a minute later.

With six minutes to go, substitute Brandon Theron found himself in a good position following a long clearance from Kapini only to see his attempt straight into Khune's hands.

In the final minutes of the match, Khune denied Charlton Mashumba from a well taken set piece after he handled the ball out of the box as they claimed their first victory.

The win takes Steve Komphela's men to the sixth spot on the log table with four points from three matches.
