Krol is Chiefs' emergency replacement - report

Cape Town - Ruud Krol has been touted to take over the reigns as head coach if Kaizer Chiefs decide to sack Steve Komphela, according to Soccer Laduma.

Despite Komphela's charges finally getting a victory in the Absa Premiership against newcomers Highlands Park on Wednesday, the former Maritzburg United coach's job remains under scrutiny.

Amakhosi were knocked out by Cape Town City FC in the MTN8 Cup quarter-final and opened their PSL campaign with a defeat against Bidvest Wits followed by a 1-1 draw against Platinum Stars.

Krol has left a huge imprint on South African football having guided Orlando Pirates to several triumphant moments between 2008-2011.

During his tenure at the Soweto outfit, the 67-year-old won back-to-back Telkom Knockout and MTN8 Cup (2010 and 2011) titles but only won the Absa Premiership in his last season in charge. His contract was not renewed.

Komphela has been told in a meeting that results need to improve or he will be shown the door at Naturena.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has also been rumoured to be interested in the services of Krol to replace Shakes Mashaba but nothing has materialised and SAFA seems to be sticking with Mashaba.

In the meantime, Chiefs will look to pick up where they left off at Highlands and build on their winning momentum when they face Maritzburg on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 18:00.
