Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has praised the versatility of defender Daniel Cardoso after an encouraging showing in the 1-1 draw with Polokwane City at FNB Stadium.
The 27-year-old started in place of full-back Siboniso Gaxa on Tuesday night, and produced an assured performance as Amakhosi were denied a victory following goalkeeper George Chigova's second-half heroics.
Komphela appreciates the fact that Cardoso can play in all positions across the backline, be it at full-back or centre-back.
"Having Cardoso, who can play anywhere - left-back, right-back or centre-back - gives us comfort in defence," Komphela was quoted as saying by Business Day.
"Because you have Cardoso, 'Tower' (Erick Mathoho) and Lorenzo Gordinho.
"If we had a normal full-back you would be less comfortable at times switching to three centre-backs. All of them can cover the width in defence and challenge in the air. Cardoso can also use the ball.
"He played much better in Cape Town. But there is also mileage on the legs. Confidence comes and then you play better."
Chiefs return to action on Saturday evening when they face Volcan Club de Moroni at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Komphela's men recorded a 4-0 victory in the first-leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie, and will be aiming to finish off the job with minimum fuss.
