Komphela hits back at Mosimane in war of words

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has defended his recent tactical change while aiming a slight dig at a rival coach.

Komphela came under severe scrutiny after delivering only two wins from Chiefs' opening eight games at the start of the new season, which included a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Baroka FC.

However, since the loss to the high-flying Bakgaga, Komphela has developed a new 3-4-3 formation that's seen Amakhosi remain unbeaten in five outings, starting with a 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.

Since then there's been criticism in certain sections of the media, with a radio reporter claiming Komphela fielded six defenders, while Pitso Mosimane has gone on rants about teams 'parking the bus'.

Nonetheless, Komphela feels those comments are unsubstantiated and certain coaches are misleading the public.

"I must warn my colleagues‚ without my coming across as an expert‚ but our coaches are sometimes misleading people in the way they read numbers," he told Times Live.

"It is often so inappropriate we are sending a wrong message. I don't know why people believe everything that coaches say‚ especially when it is wrong.

"The match we played at Loftus when we lost 2-1 (in November last year) we were playing 3-4-3. The match we just played at Loftus (on October 17) when we beat then 2-1 we played 3-4-3.

"It is so easy to spill poison rather to spread something that is progressive. We are building a product there‚ the PSL‚ that we must be proud of. We are all eating from this table.

"I get my pay cheque from this. All of us need to protect this industry and then we can go places. But we seem to be kicking the very same table we are eating from.

"It's amazing. Sometimes when I read the stories and I see myself talking a lot... I wish I could be quick so there is clarity. But often when you are brief‚ it doesn't come out very clear... and when you go on too long‚ it is too much!"
