Khune is the best, says former Bafana keeper

Cape Town - Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana keeper Calvin Marlin believes Kaizer Chiefs stopper Itumeleng Khune has been the best in his position this season.

Khune was on Monday confirmed as one of three candidates by the Premier Soccer League for the Goalkeeper of the Season award, the others being Denis Onyango of Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United keeper Richard Ofori.

The 30-year-old Khune remains the first choice for Bafana Bafana and managed to keep a very impressive 16 clean sheets in 27 league matches in the just-completed season.

Marlin, who won the award 12 years ago, says his vote would go to Khune.

"If you look at Itu, generally I think he does stand out head and shoulders‚ then it would probably be Denis‚ and then Richard would probably fill in there somewhere," the current Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper coach told TimesLive.

"I mean‚ Richard looks a bit awkward and clumsy at times‚ but as a team Maritzburg did well this year," he continued.

"But if you look in general play‚ I don't think Denis had as good a season as he did the year before.

"He conceded a few goals that you might have said in better form he would have saved."

The awards evening is set for the Sandton Convention Centre on Tuesday May 29.
