Jomo Cosmos stun Kaizer Chiefs

Cape Town - Jomo Cosmos moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The win, courtesy of an 85th minute strike from Mxolisi Macuphu, sees Cosmos up to 14th place with 20 points, three points above 15th place University of Pretoria.

Chiefs, on the other hand, are in fourth place with 39 points after suffering their fourth consecutive loss in all competitions.

Cosmos put up an impressive defensive display in the opening half to keep a rampant Amakhosi at bay.

Chiefs dominated ball possession, but were unable to effectively penetrate the Cosmos defence.

Instead Chiefs were reduced to long range efforts on goal in the opening half, but none really threatened the visitors’ goal.

Amakhosi’s most significant chance of the half came in the 37th minute when Camaldine Abra met a left wing cross from William Twala, but defender Ndabenhle Mthembu was on hand to deflect his 12-yard effort inches wide.

Chiefs continued to press forward, but Cosmos held them at bay to go into the break all-square.

The same pattern continued in the second 45 with Chiefs on the attack, but the Cosmos defence remained stubborn and firm.

Erick Mathoho came close in the 49th minute, but his header at corner-kick went wide of the target.

Siphiwe Tshabalala nearly found the back of the net in the 78th minute, but his 24-yard free-kick went inches over the crossbar.

Mxolisi Macuphu then stunned Chief sin the 85th minute with a glorious 24-yard half volley that found the corner of the goal to hand Cosmos the surprise win, 1-0.
