Johnson slams Athlone playing surface

Cape Town - AmaZulu head coach Cavin Johnson has slammed the state of the Athlone Stadium pitch after his side's draw with Ajax Cape Town.

The Durban team scored two goals in added time to snatch a 2-2 draw with the Urban Warriors.

Cape Town Stadium has been unavailable for various reasons over the past month, and is also set to host the World Sevens Series in two weeks time.

This means that Cape Town's two Absa Premiership clubs, Cape Town City and Ajax, have both shifted their games to Athlone, which is also playing host to the clubs from the National First Division as well as the Second Division.

Added to that, the Mother City's current drought, it is no surprise that the Athlone pitch is taking major strain.

"It's shocking‚" Johnson said after the match on Saturday.

"Initially I thought it would hold‚ but I put in a protest for the pitch before the start of the game.

"If you are in Johannesburg and you play on a pitch like this‚ it will hold‚ but if you are in Cape Town then it becomes a beach.

"It's not good enough."
