Johnson: No special focus on ex-players

Johannesburg - After securing a point away from home against Orlando Pirates at the weekend, Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson said there was nothing special about facing his former players in the Buccaneers fold.

Dikwena held the Buccaneers to a 1-1 draw at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday thanks to a deserved equaliser by Ndumiso Mabena after Issa Sarr gave the Soweto giants a lead before the interval.

Dikwena had to battle against their four previous employees, Sarr, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Siyabonga Mpontshane and Tsepo Gumede who were all in the starting line-up for Pirates and also Roger Majafa who came on as a substitute but Johnson said that they never planned around them but instead they were focusing on playing against Pirates as a team.

“We didn’t plan to play against Mpontshane, Issa Sarr, Tsepo (Gumede), Nyauza or Roger Majafa for that matter,” insisted Johnson.

“We planned to play against Orlando Pirates as a team and when you plan like that, whoever they put on the pitch is a plus.

“But at the same time, we don’t really focus on certain individuals because If you plan against certain individuals like the world always planning to play against Ronaldo and Messi then you will get a strong hiding.

“So we were playing against Pirates and there was nothing special about facing our former players.”

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
