Jele recalls mistake in CAF final

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates defender Happy Jele says that his mistake against Etoile du Sahel made him feel "very bad" as a player and captain.

The Buccaneers suffered a 2-1 aggregate defeat in the CAF Confederation Cup final last month after their Sahel claimed an away goal in the first-leg encounter.

Jele was at fault in Etoile’s only goal scored in the second-leg after he deflected the ball into his own net despite Felipe Ovono’s effort to stop the ball.

“Of course it (the error that led to the goal) was hard on me. If they hadn’t scored that goal, maybe the result would have been different,” Jele told Soccer Laduma.

“It was a team effort and we did everything together, but of course it felt very bad for me as a player and the captain.”

Meanwhile, Jele admits that learning to win at home is a lesson they have learnt this year after many disappointing performances at the Orlando Stadium.

“If we had won at home by a good scoreline, we could have just gone to Tunisia to finish off the job.

“Winning at home was one of the lessons we didn’t learn in Africa. It is always important as it puts you at an advantage in the away game."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
