Cape Town - Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes his side will avoid relegation despite a start to the Premiership season that has seen his side lose three and draw two in their opening six matches.

The reigning league champions have endured an awful opening to 2017/18 although they were boosted with their first win last Saturday when they beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 at home, courtesy of Gerald Phiri's fifth minute goal.

Nonetheless, the Clever Boys reside in 13th place just one point clear of the relegation places. With that said, Hunt takes the view that his team have enough quality to avoid the drop.

He told reporters, "It's hard. I mean‚ I’ve never taken a beating like this in my life. I've always been on the other end of the scale. Now I've seen things that I've never seen before. Maybe I was starting to believe in other things.

"We're chopping and changing every game. Our back five we played last year that won us the league and cups‚ and has been consistent for the last year or two‚ is not here (due to injuries).

"I said to the players‚ all I want now is we've got 25 games and I want 25 0-0s. That's all. And then we'll be fine. We'll survive relegation."

Meanwhile the PSL is set to take action against Wits striker Gabadinho Mhango after a spitting incident in a game against AmaZulu.

PSL acting chief executive Mato Madlala confirmed the league was looking into the matter.

“Yes, our prosecutor is on top of it and has been in contact with AmaZulu. Let’s wait and see what the investigation says before we comment further,” she said.
