Gordinho, Twala take Chiefs to victory

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs secured their second successive Premiership win with a 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

Lorenzo Gordinho scored an early first-half goal against the run of play to open the scoring against The Team of Choice, but the goal changed the balance of play.

Maritzburg returned to ascendency and will be livid after Bevan Fransman's header was controversially ruled out as an equaliser.

However, Chiefs brushed off that scare as William Twala made it 2-0 before half-time.

In the opening stages of the game, Maritzburg United looked the stronger of the two sides, with Chiefs clearly still low on confidence.

However, it was the Soweto giants who got drew first blood through the unlikely source of defender Lorenzo Gordinho - who rose highest to head the ball past a flat-footed Vigil Vries.

The goal sparked Chiefs into a second gear and their confidence grew with every pass, but the away side fought back valiantly and will be disappointed with the referee ruling out a goal from Bevan Fransman - it looked to be a legitimate header won fairly in the area.

Chiefs brushed off that scare, though, and ended up doubling the lead when Mitchell Katsvairo teed up William Twala on the stroke of half-time.

In the second half it was clear that Steve Komphela had instructed his charges to go and take control of the fixture, with more possession for the home side.

There were returns to the field of play for stalwarts Siphiwe Tshabalala and Bernard Parker mid-way through the half and the duo's experience is what kept Chiefs composed in possession to see off the challenge of Martizburg.

The result means it's two wins from two now for Komphela as the Glamour Boys temporarily move up to fourth spot with seven points.
