Ex-Pirates skipper backs Sundowns' CAF quest

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates 1995 CAF Champions League winning captain Edward Motale believes Mamelodi Sundowns are on the right track in the continental competition.

Sundowns have been in hot form and are unbeaten in the competition so far. The Brazilians overcame Zamalek 2-1 in their Group B clash in Cairo on Sunday.

Downs have six points from two games with a home clash against Zamalek on July 27 and away to Enyimba on August 23 still to play.

"They need to be lauded and what a brave performance they displayed, big ups to them and well done," Motale told Goal.com website.

"That was a great result and more specially winning away against a team like Zamalek. But they must not sleep on their laurels, because it is great in such competitions when you start winning away, it is a sign of good things.

"They have done that and they must just continue with it because on home soil, they will always have the advantage. It is their home ground. I was really excited for them for last night.

"I think the trip to Nigeria is going to mentally challenging because they play with you psychologically and as well as physically on the field.

"So that is why I say they must not relax now and rest on their laurels, the big tests are still coming."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
