Da Gama praises Mekoa

Cape Town - South Africa under-23 coach Owen da Gama has backed young Maritzburg United prodigy Deolin Mekoa to be a star player in the Premiership next season.

The 22-year-old defender has made his mark with Bafana Bafana in the ongoing COSAFA Cup in Namibia, helping South Africa to the semi-final where they take on Swaziland on Wednesday.

Mekoa calmly converted the winning penalty against Lesotho in the quarter-final over the weekend Saturday.

"You can never judge a player about the performance of his team but you judge him by his performance," Da Gama told KickOff.

"As you know we cannot just change the whole team but you got to have continuity and we just had to strengthen him. He's the player that has done very well at U-23 level and he took his performance to his club.

"I've always said that he can play for any PSL team and there is no doubt about it, any PSL team."

The Bafana team at the competition comprises of under-23 player as preparation for the Rio Olympic Games in August.
