CT City could face PSL sanctions over sponsorship deal

Cape Town - Cape Town City could reportedly face sanctions from the Premier Soccer League after not getting permission to wear their new kit branded with the name of sponsor, SportPesa.

City recently announced their multi-million rand sponsorship with the sports betting company, and subsequently played with the branding on their shirts in last Saturday's MTN8 quarter-final victory over Polokwane City.

According to the TimesLIVE website, the Citizens are in contravention of a league ruling which says written permission must first be obtained before shirts branded with a new sponsor name are worn.

The publication's source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said: "It was only because it was an MTN8 game that it went ahead but if it was a league game, it certainly would not."

Polokwane, who lost the contest after an own goal from defender Sibusiso Mbonani, allegedly got wind of the dispute between City and the PSL, and filed an official protest.

It is unclear at this stage what sanctions the Benni McCarthy-coached outfit may face.

The Citizens will switch their focus to the Premiership on Friday evening as they face champions Bidvest Wits.

Kick off is at 20:00.
