Cosmos pile more misery on Pirates

Potchefstroom - Jomo Cosmos defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at Olen Park on Saturday evening.

A goal from Charlton Mashumba in the 75th minute was enough for Cosmos to defeat their more fancied opponents.

Pirates started the brighter of the teams but failed to capitalise on their early chances.

The Buccaneers, however, kept pressing and were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute, only to see Cosmos goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker deny Lehlohonolo Majoro from the spot-kick.

After an entertaining first-half on a rainy evening, the score was locked at 0-0 at the break.

Cosmos came out much better in the second stanza and Mashumba scored when they caught Bucs on a quick counter attack.

With time running out, Pirates coach Eric Tinkler introduced young midfielder Gift Motupa for central defender Rooi Mahamutsa.

But it was all in vain as Cosmos held on for the win.

The win sees Cosmos remain in 14th spot on the log but they are now only two points behind Pirates, who occupy 12th position.

Teams:

Cosmos: Naicker, Mngomezulu, Nsabiyumva, Lingwati, Jampies, Monare, Mdamba (Zulu 70'), Makobela, Mashumba, Maluleke (Mukamba 85'), Aka (Mhone 77').

Pirates: Mhlongo, Mahamutsa (Motupa 86'), Matlaba, Gumede, Gcaba, Sarr, Makola, Rakhale, Majoro (Ndoro 73'), Gabuza (Mugerwa 71'), Qalinge

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
