Cape Town - Cape Town City FC owner John Comitis has revealed that only players that had binding contracts were retained from Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Comitis recently purchased Black Aces and relocated them to the Mother City, renaming the club Cape Town City. A core group of players, including the Premiership's top goal scorer last season Collins Mbesuma, were offloaded in the process causing more than a few raised eyebrows.
Comitis stated that the players with expired contracts and those who had a renewal option were let go regardless of reputation or squad status.
"I inherited a club that had existing contracts. All the contracts that were existing in this current season - all those players are here. All those contracts have been respected by ourselves as of 1 June," Comitis told KickOff.
"Players that are not here either had an end to their contract or there had to be a renewal of the option to their contract, and that decision was made by the previous owners.
"Those matters have been dealt with internally with the previous owners and they have not negated any of their responsibilities. In fact I have written confirmation that all these outstanding payments that they have to the players will be respected and honoured."
