Chiefs explain decision to not sign Argentine striker

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has revealed the club declined to sign Argentine striker, Jonathan Philippe, as he wasn't an improvement in the striking department.

The 29-year-old arrived at Chiefs in July on trial and it was thought the player was close to winning a deal, after seemingly initially impressing the club's technical team.

However, Philippe will not be offered a deal with the Glamour Boys and reportedly has left South Africa, with his next destination unclear as he seeks a new club.

Komphela told reporters: "We let go of him because we're saying if we have to bring in a striker, it has been to be above what we have. We felt that he was not at the stage where you'd say he's above (Bernard) Parker, he's above maybe (Gustavo) Paez and (Ryan) Moon.

"We said, instead of staying too long, let's rather release him and then see if he's got other options somewhere out there."

The Glamour Boys next host Eric Tinkler's SuperSport United at the FNB on Wednesday with Komphela hoping to overturn a host of bad results against his opposite number.

Kick off is at 19:30.
