Castro the hero for Chiefs on debut

Cape Town - Ten-men Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to beat Baroka 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday with new signing Leonardo Castro scoring a late winner after coming off the bench.

As it happened: Baroka FC v Kaizer Chiefs

Baroka were quickest out of the blocks and applied some good early pressure on the Chiefs backline.

Amakhosi were soon on the ball though and had their first chance though Gustavo Paez, but his effort was cleared off the line.

Itumeleng Khune was in fine form to deny Robin Ngalande, who struck well from the edge of the area.

Baroka remained on top midway through the first half, but failed to make the most of several corners before Shaku Dineo headed a 30th minute corner down into the ground and up over the bar.

Bakgaga were, however, in the lead just a minute later as Lucky Nguzana reacted quickest to a shot from Talent Chawapiwa that had rebounded back into play off the right upright.

Joseph Molangoane then failed to test Virgil Vries with a weak effort with 34 minutes on the clock, while Ryan Moon was close to an equaliser with a header that flew just wide as the half drew to a close.

Despite their impressing first-half showing, Baroka were pegged back by Chiefs just two minutes after the break as Moon got  onto the end of a Siphiwe Tshabalala delivery and this time made no mistake with a header into the bottom corner of the net.

Paez was off target with an ambitious effort from range before Castro replaced Moon for his debut.

The new Chiefs signing looked lively ahead of a moment of madness from Molangoane, who was red-carded for an elbow on Khutso Mohwatseleng off the ball.

With time running out for either side to find a winning goal, Vries denied George Maluleka before Castro headed a 79th minute chance just over the target.

The Colombian though became an instant hero when he fired in from inside the box into the top of the net with a first-time shot.

Dineo was then close to a late leveller with a diving header that beat Khune but not the right hand post, and ultimately it was Chiefs who emerged victorious to record their first ever win over Baroka FC.
