Cape Town - Orlando Pirates have hailed Mamelodi Sundowns for winning the 2016 edition of the CAF Champions League after a dramatic 3-1 aggregate victory over Zamalek.
Prior to Sundowns' achievement, Pirates were the last South African club to win the competition in 1995.
In addition, Bucs went close again in 2013 when they lost the final of the same competition to Al Ahly.
The Happy People have been somewhat unfortunate in Africa in recent times - the side also lost the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup after losing in the final to Etoile du Sahel from Tunisia.
Nonetheless, despite losing their proud record of being Mzansi's only club to have won the Champions League, Pirates have hailed the Brazilians for achieving their maiden title.
A message posted on the Sea Robbers' official Twitter account read: "Congratulations to Masandawana for winning the 2016 CAF Champions League. South Africa, once and always."
Congratulations to @Masandawana for winning the 2016 CAF Champions League. #SouthAfricaOnceAlways
