Benni tired of making excuses for senior City players

Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has promised to read the riot act to a number of his experienced players, following a recent slump in form.

After losing the MTN8 final to SuperSport United on penalties, the Citizens have since lost consecutive matches to Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United in the Premiership.

After the most recent loss to Chippa, City threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 with a below par second half showing of which McCarthy was particularly scathing.

He told the SowetanLIVE, "This week is just going to be about us having meetings and seeing where the problem is or what the problem is. I'm not going to even be too bothered about training. I think the team is fit.

“But they just went to sleep‚ man. As a coach you have to be responsible with what you say but I think our senior players need a wake-up call sometimes. A good slap or two!

"Some senior players have to start taking responsibility. They are not kids anymore. I'm tired of making excuses for them‚ players also have to stand up and be counted."

City will be aiming to get back to winning ways when they face league leaders Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in a Telkom Knockout round of 16 clash on Sunday.

Kick off is at 15:30.
