Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has hailed the influence of veteran midfielder and playmaker Teko Modise following his side's 1-0 victory over Free State Stars earlier this week.
Despite playing on a bumpy surface at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, the Citizens triumphed 1-0 courtesy of Taariq Fielies’ late strike. However, Modise was a star performer in the middle of the park as he controlled much of the passing for City.
As such, McCarthy praised the 35-year-old, saying, "I was pleased to see Teko now taking a massive‚ commanding role … he was instrumental with his passing. Even if the pitch made us look average-ish because it was so bumpy‚ he was excellent in the way he controlled the game."
Meanwhile, he also expressed concern about the length of time striker Victor Obinna could be out for, after he limped off with a hamstring strain against Ea Lla Koto.
The 39-year-old said, "It’s a hamstring‚ it’s frustrating when you see someone work so hard and put in massive effort to be there. Then something silly where he sprinted off and felt it [the hamstring]‚ then felt it again later."
"He will have a scan and then we will assess the problem. I am hoping that it is just age and not anything serious!"
