Baxter hopes for better in 2017

Cape Town - SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter says his side are happy to end 2016 on top of the Premiership table although he believes his team can do better next year.

Matsatsantsa ended the first-half of the campaign with something of a fortunate 2-1 victory over Polokwane City, and finished the year on top of the standings on goal difference over Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City.

However, Baxter revealed that he expected better performances from United in 2017.

He told reporters: "I think we deserve the win because we had enough character and tactical nous to get over the line.

"Sometimes you can do that, but 2016 can keep some of the sort of situations we saw and I hope 2017 shows us a lot more of what we're like.

"A lot of positives (to be taken), but to be top of the table now - you get nothing so it doesn't really matter.

"We will take it and it is nice to sit and look at on Christmas Day to cheer you up, but that is all it is. It is only cosmetic at the moment."

The Pretoria-based outfit resume league action with a clash against Golden Arrows on 8 February.
