Baxter happy with scrappy win

Cape Town - SuperSport United head coach Stuart Baxter is adamant that winning is more important than playing attractive football in cup competitions.

His comments come in the wake of a hard-fought and oft-times scrappy 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates on Saturday to advance to the final of the Telkom Knockout, where they will face Cape Town City.

"The cup is the cup, isn't it? The cup is not about playing you best football, or even making your best move, it's about playing the move that's most unpleasant for your opponents," Baxter said after the game.

"I think we played better with the ball in the first 20 minutes, creating chances, but then after the goal I think a few of them were looking at the clock and thinking we're in front, that became compounded because Pirates play nice football.

"They move the ball quickly, they shift sides, they put a lot of pressure on your defensive organisation. But I thought the boys, with their defensive organisation, really restricted them a lot.

"Right there at the death, we could get the second, I don't know how we didn't get the second one because Pirates left it the same without a man sent off.

"I knew they would gamble, so we just had bigger space in transition, but I'm delighted for the players and it's another cup final for the club. Hopefully we'll have a decent shot at it."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
