Athlone Stadium to stage Ajax v Chiefs match

Cape Town - The match between Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs has been given the green light and will be played at Athlone Stadium.

According to the club's official website, the Urban Warriors request to move the fixture to Durban was denied, and having failed to get back to Moses Mabhida Stadium Management - Ajax subsequently lost their booking of the venue.

The Urban Warriors CEO, Ari Efstathiou, confirmed that a third priority meeting between the necessary stakeholders was held this morning to make a final decision regarding the matter.

“There is no team that doesn’t want to play at home, it is an advantage that you have and the last thing that you want to do is to play outside of your city. Playing outside of Cape Town is a huge disadvantage for us, especially when playing a team like Kaizer Chiefs,” said Efstathiou at Ikamva.

“The second fact, there were discussions in the media that we wanted to move the game to Durban for financial gain, but I just want to explain that there would have been no financial gain – in actual fact – it would probably cost us more, we have to transport our supporters and team there.

“As additional information, we told the PSL (Premier Soccer League) that if they felt we wanted to move there because of a financial gain we were prepared to donate any additional profit made – by moving the game to Durban – to charity. That issue is also off the table.

“We have been battling to get the date for this fixture since October last year, we tried to find a solution without success. The only option left to us was either Athlone Stadium or Moses Mabhida. On the 7th of February we wrote to the league, asking for a change of venue – in the meantime we booked Moses Mabhida just in case, with Athlone an option."

The fixture will indeed take place at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, February 25.

Kick off is at 20:15.
