Akpeyi injury concern for the Chilli Boys

Cape Town - Chippa United are sweating on a neck injury to their Nigerian international goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

The 31-year-old hurt his neck during United's 0-0 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and was replaced on 68 minutes by Brighton Mhlongo.

Chilli Boys head coach Teboho Moloi confirmed after the game that Akpeyi's injury could potentially be a serious one, although no further details have emerged yet.

"Daniel Akpeyi has been rushed to the hospital following an injury," Moloi said.

Akpeyi has been in outstanding form for Chippa this season - in the nine league games he has played, he has conceded only four goals while keeping five clean sheets.

The former Warri Wolves custodian has been a regular in the Nigeria national team squad of late and was in goal two weeks ago when the Super Eagles beat Argentina 4-2 in a friendly.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
