Wits too clever for Ajax

Cape Town - Goals from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Elias Pelembe were enough to hand Bidvest Wits three points as they defeated Ajax Cape Town 2-1 in their Absa Premiership clash at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday night.

Wits looked dangerous down the left flank with Onismor Bhasera and Daine Klate combining well to cause havoc in Ajax’s half.

The Clever Boys made use of their early dominance with Vilakazi grabbing the lead from a well worked set piece involving Klate and Pelembe to put his team ahead in the 12th minute.

Abbubaker Mobara levelled matters in the 27th minute, beating Moeneeb Joseph with a left-footed effort to bring his side back into the game

Pelembe made an attempt to beat Ansi Jaakkola from outside the box towards the end of the first half, only for his effort to go wide.

Thulani Hlatshwayo’s headed effort also went wide as the match approached the half-time break, but at the end of the first half it remained 1-1.

Wits were the better side in the second stanza, and almost took the lead early on with Phumlani Ntshangase’s effort hitting the upright.

The impressive Pelembe put Wits back into the lead with fifteen minutes to go, set up wonderfully by newcomer Phakamani Mahlambi.

Second half substitute, Franklin Cale, had a chance to get his side back into the game in the 83rd minute but his deflected free kick hit the post.

Mobara also had a chance to get his second of the evening, but this time Josephs was up to the task to deny him.

Wits managed to hold on to their lead despite a scary end to the game to continue with their great start to the new season, having beaten Supersport United during the midweek MTN8 quarter-finals.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
