The centre-back joins the Clever Boys from PSL rivals Platinum Stars, and has also plied his trade with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and English Premier League giants Tottenham.

The defender has, however, earned a bit of a reputation at his former clubs, with the 30-year-old having hit the headlines for personal and disciplinary issues.

However, Wits coach Roger De Sa has managed looked past those discrepancies and has opted rather to focus on the player's talents on the pitch.

De Sa told Supersport: "I am very happy with the new signing, OJ Mabizela. We need a little bit of experience. The quality of a player he is will help us and go a long way. I think he will help us a lot.

"There are those rumours with people saying he is a handful, a troubled player but I disagree with that. I think just his ability alone will be enough for us. I think he's got his head screwed on right, he's been all over the place and he will help us a hell of a lot."
