Johannesburg - Wits have kept their top-three ambitions alive as they secured a 2-1 win over newly-crowned Premiership champions Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.
As it happened: Kaizer Chiefs v Wits
The Students got off to a flying start as Henrico Botes put them ahead after just six minutes, although Siphiwe Tshabalala found a response for AmaKhosi 10 minutes before the break.
However, the Clever Boys went back in front 12 minutes after the restart through Paseka Sekese, with the goal proving decisive as Gavin Hunt's side moved level on points with Orlando Pirates in third following the Buccaneers' 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United.
Wits wasted no time in asserting themselves on the game, and Botes gave them the perfect start after heading home from Ben Motshwari's delivery after just a few minutes.
They were, however, dealt an early setback after star frontman Sibusiso Vilakazi had to be replaced through injury.
George Maluleka looked to work something for the hosts but could only shoot at Moeneeb Josephs, although Tshabalala would soon show him how it's done, firing home from a free kick to level things up.
The visitors started the second period the same way they did the first and went back in front on 57 minutes, Sekese nodding home from Jabulani Shongwe's cross into the area.
Phumlani Ntshangase then looked to add to their lead but saw his shot saved by Reyaad Pieterse, although the Glamour Boys were unable to find a response and subsequently suffered defeat, albeit only their third of the entire top-flight campaign.
