Wits out to guard top spot

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits will look to maintain their place at the top of the Absa Premiership when they host Bloemfontein Celtic at Bidvest Stadium.

Wits claimed their fifth win of the season when they beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 away on October 21.

The Johannesburg side has claimed three wins from as many home matches this season.

The Clever Boys are placed first on the Absa Premiership log with 16 points from seven matches.

Celtic suffered their second defeat of the season when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Mamelodi Sundowns on October 21.

The Bloemfontein side has claimed seven points from four away matches this season.

Phunya Sele Sele are placed sixth on the Absa Premiership log with 14 points from eight matches.

In head-to-head stats, Wits and Celtic have met in 51 league matches since 1985.

The Clever Boys have claimed 21 wins compared to 16 for Phunya Sele Sele, while 14 matches have been drawn.

Wits have won 14 of their 26 home matches against Celtic, suffering five defeats in the process.

Last season the Clever Boys won 1-0 in Bloemfontein, while Phunya Sele Sele won 1-0 in the return game in Johannesburg.

The last three league meetings between the teams have been won 1-0 by the away side.

Kick-off is at 20:15 on Saturday, October 31.
