Johannesburg - Wits ended a run of 14 rounds without a win when they defeated Golden Arrows 2-1 at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.
Despite seeing his side struggle game after game for some time, Roger De Sa again opted for a handful of changes following the goalless midweek draw with Jomo Cosmos.
Meanwhile, irrespective of Siyabonga Sangweni having signed a new contract with the club, Arrows only introduced Nhlanhla Zothwane for Musa Bilankulu from the side that recently upset league leaders SuperSport United.
Nevertheless both teams had early chances, with Marawaan Bantam and Richard Henyekane threatening at either end.
However it was from a succession of fouls from the visitors – the last of which was committed inside the penalty area – that gave Sifiso Myeni the chance to net a 25th minute spot-kick for The Students’ first goal in over 650 minutes of football.
Abafana Bes’thende regrouped during the break as Henyekane twice drew fine saves from Darren Keet.
At the other end Myeni was denied his brace by Thulasizwe Khuzwayo, as The Clever Boys looked for the comfort of a second goal that finally arrived in the 82nd minute when Mark Haskins headed in a cross from the earlier goal-scorer.
And while Arrows grabbed a late consolation goal from a Henyekane penalty, the Durban outfit yet again failed to put together consecutive victories this season, as Wits gained some much needed breathing space between themselves and the bottom two.
