Johannesburg - Wits and Ajax Cape Town played out to a 0-0 draw in their Premiership match at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday evening.

In a game lacking in many genuine chances, both sides woke up in the final quarter in a desperate attempt to snatch the victory.

Wits were the more attacking side in the second half, while Ajax worked well on the counter attack. Ultimately, neither side could break the deadlock and were forced to settle for a draw.

With the result, The Clever Boys move to 16 points from 11 games, while Ajax move to nine points.

The better chances in the first period fell to the visitors, with Khama Billiat for Ajax running hard at the Students.

In the third minute, the home side had a penalty appeal turned down.

Tinashe Nengomasha went to ground in the box after he beat the Ajax defender, but the referee waved play on.

James Mayinga took a free kick in the 11th minute, and his lofted shot brought out the best from Ajax goalkeeper Sander Westerveld who tipped the shot over the bar.

Billiat had his first decent attempt in the 28th minute. From the edge of the area his strong effort was confidently handled by Wits keeper Ryan Harrison.

In first half injury time, Granwald Scott was the closest to opening the scoring. Scott found the ball on the edge of the area, and made a quick turn before unleashing a fierce shot requiring a diving save from Harrison.

Papy Faty tried a speculative shot in the 59th minute from long range, but his effort was well wide of target.

Four minutes after the hour mark, Ajax were, it seemed, on the verge of breaking the deadlock. A Billiat corner into the box saw Lebogang Manyama effort hit the upright and Matthew Booth hit the rebound goal-ward only to see the ball cleared off the line.

Billiat did manage to find the net in the 80th minute, but his endeavour was ruled offside.

An 86th minute Thato Mokeko free kick, needed the close attention of Harrison who turned the ball over the cross bar for a corner.

In injury time, Mayinga received his second yellow card and was given his marching orders as Wits ended the match with 10 men.
