Johannesburg - Wits and Ajax Cape Town settled for a 1-1 draw in their Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium here on Wednesday night.
Ajax took the lead in the 10th minute through a Thembinkosi “Terror” Fanteni goal, and the home side responded with a Timothy Batabaire equaliser in the 57th minute.
The Students, looking to pick up their first win of the year and their first in 10 games, did well to earn up a point as Ajax looked the better side throughout.
The Cape Town outfit assumed control of the counter early on as they dominated possession and territory.
The visitors scored the opener in the 10th minute with an attack that exposed the frail Clever Boys defence.
Fanteni beat the keeper from close range in the middle of the box after Manyama made a probing run down the right and crossed for the striker to put them ahead.
Wits, lacking in confidence with a youthful side, resorted to speculative efforts on goal.
On the half-hour mark, Ajax were close to doubling their lead when George Maluleka drifted into space and forced a full diving save from Energy Murambadoro in the Wits goal.
The closest the home side came to drawing level in the first period was in the 34th minute, when Sibusiso Vilakazi nearly turned in a flick at the near post from a corner, but he had his shot deflected out for another corner.
Asive Langwe tested Sander Westerveld in the Ajax goal with a powerful strike from 30 metres out on the left hand side, but the former Liverpool keeper had it covered.
Batabaire, however, headed past Westerveld to settle matters with the equaliser, with a little more than half an hour left on the clock.
