The Urban Warriors are second in the standings by virtue of goal difference, but they have collected the same amount of points as pacesetters Orlando Pirates.
Foppe de Haan's men are unbeaten in seven encounters and while the attention was on Bucs and Kaizer Chiefs this weekend, Ajax recorded a gritty win against Free State Stars while South Africa's big two shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Captain Hans Vonk told The Times: "We don't want to take the lead too early, we want to take charge during the last four or five games.
"That's why it was nice to let Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have the limelight this weekend."
It wasn't the best showing from the hosts at Athlone Stadium, but they managed to secure maximum points despite a wealth of pressing and pressure from Ea Lla Koto.
"It was difficult to compete against Stars - they are very physical and effective," added Vonk.
"Their keeper, Kennedy Mweene, kicks it all the way up to the striker, and before you can start building up from the back, they're all over you. It was difficult, we couldn't keep good possession."
The veteran goalkeeper reserved special praise for goalscorer Khama Billiat, who is certainly a contender for the PSL's Young Player of the Season.
He has netted five times thus far in his debut league campaign and Vonk feels he can improve.
"He's one of those players with unbelievable skill, but when he came he was not aware that football is a serious business, he thought it was all nice and fun," added Vonk.
"He's getting to grips with that now, but he can improve a lot more. It was a tough night for him, because he was filling in as a central striker for Terror Fanteni, who was sick."
If Billiat gets better, Thulani Serero continues to shine and Fanteni keeps hitting the back of the net, the Soweto giants must prepare for a massive onslaught from Cape Town in the league run-in.
