Johannesburg - Neither side could find the winning goal as AmaZulu and Free State Stars played to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership match at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Although Free State were the visiting team they certainly didn’t look like it in the opening 45 minutes. The Ea Lla Koto took control of the midfield early on and controlled the flow of the game.
With Stars dominating the possession stakes, AmaZulu looked to be chasing shadows and when the Usuthu did get hold of the ball they often gifted it back to Stars with some poor passing.
Free State were on the attack from the first whistle and came close to finding the game’s opening goal in the eighth minute when Mpho Makola drilled a 20-yard free-kick just over the crossbar.
Although Stars dominated possession AmaZulu did create some chances on goal. In the 12th minute Carlington Nyadombo rose highest at a corner-kick to head the ball just inches wide of the target.
Matome Madimabe also came close to scoring in the 21st minute when his 30-yard shot had the AmaZulu keeper scrambling across his goal line, but luckily enough for him the shot went just wide.
Then in the 33rd minute we should have seen the opening goal when a great passing movement by Usuthu saw Goodman Dlamini in some space 12-yards out from goal, but his shot was a poor one and went well wide of the target.
The rest of the half saw Stars playing some nice football but unable to create any other decent chances in front of goal.
The second half saw both sides eager to break the deadlock and consequently both teams tried their luck from long range, but with very little success.
Ayanda Dlamini should really have found the game’s opening goal in the 68th minute when he had the ball at his feet six-yards out from goal, but his shot was a horrible one and went inches wide of the right-hand up-right.
That was as close as either side came to breaking the deadlock as the game finished all square at the end of the 90 minutes.
