United too strong for Birds

Johannesburg - Dove Wome has scored the only goal as SuperSport United defeated Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership match at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday.

An assist by defender Thato Mokeke allowed the Togolese international to convert with his left foot.

The loss leaves the Dube Birds at position 13 and means they now have six losses this season so far, whilst Gordon Igesund’s men go up to position seven on the log standings.

The first half didn’t produce the fireworks as it was expected to, with the first 10 minutes dominated by fouls from both sides.

However, in the 25th minute, United were the first side to attack as David Mathebula unleashed a shot but it went wide to the right of Greg Etafia’s goals.
Two minutes later, defender Sibusiso Khumalo also piled the pressure on the Birds but his attempt was blocked by Lerato Chabangu.

In the 37th minute, Igesund saw he needed some creativity in the midfield and took off Thamsanqa Teyise, and after five minutes, his charges found the net courtesy of Dove Wome.

The second half got underway which saw the hosts’ coach Fani Madida taking out Vuyisile Wana and introduced Dikgang Mabalane, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Lefa Tsutsulupa, but the visitors stood firm in their defending.

Just like the first stanza, the second half didn’t produce breathtaking action as the Birds tried to manoeuvre in the middle of the park with the help of Tsutsulupa, but their efforts could not trouble Ronwen Williams.

In the 88th minute Bennett Chenene fouled Luvhengo Mungomeni and the Birds were awarded a free kick, but Lantshene Phalane’s shot went wide.
With two minutes to go, the hosts tried in vain to find the equaliser as Amatsantsantsa A Pitori walked away with the three points, leaving the Birds empty handed.
