Tuks, Ajax in stalemate

Pretoria - Despite thumping Ajax Cape Town 5-1 earlier in the season, the University of Pretoria were held to a goalless draw by the Cape side in a Premiership clash at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The stalemate stretched AmaTuks' run of winless games to seven, with their last win coming against Chippa United in December last year, while Ajax extended a similar run of poor results to six league outings.

Tuks dictated the early phases and had a pair of opportunities fall to Bongani Zungu, who drilled a shot wide inside five minutes, before curling an effort from in from of goal wide of goalkeeper Sander Westerveld's right upright.

The visitors replied with their first real chance 25 minutes into the tie through Khama Billiat, who dispatched his well-struck free-kick at goal, but goalkeeper Washington Arubi was equal to the task, tipping over the bar and out for a corner.

Zungu threatened again with 15 minutes to the break but headed an effort left of goal, before Billiat and Mabhudi Khenyeza saw their half-chances prove fruitless for the Urban Warriors.

Tuks started the second period the nervier of the sides, while Ajax camped out in their hosts' half for much of the stanza, but failed to test Arubi, while at the other end, Senegalese striker Mame Niang came close in the 70th minute, but was once again thwarted by Westerveld who remained solid in his goal-box.

Niang had the best chance of the half 11 minutes from time, when he received an accurate ball over the top of the Ajax defence from Zungu, before the lanky striker forced a save from Westerveld, who palmed wide to deny Tuks the opener.
