Cape Town - Free State Stars coach Kinnah Phiri has revealed that Mbuyiselo Thethani will not be part of the starting line up for their Nedbank Cup clash against Bidvest Wits.

Ea Lla Koto are currently sitting 13th in the Premiership standings, just two points clear of the relegation zone, meaning the Ke Yona competition will come as a welcome break for the Free State side.

However, speaking to Vodacom Football, Phiri revealed he is not yet ready to throw the Ventersburg-born player in at the deep end, despite his introduction as a second-half substitute against SuperSport United last week helping overturn a 2-0 deficit to eventually draw 2-2.

He said: "You know this boy is an 18-year-old and definitely playing very well, therefore we don't want to put too much pressure on his shoulders. We fielded him (against SuperSport) after half time because we felt that perhaps he might rescue us since we were two goals down, and he did exactly that.

"However, the boy is still adjusting to the team and at training, and we have seen that he is an asset for the team's shooters, therefore I'm nursing him I don't want to throw him into deep waters yet. When the time is right I will do it."

Thethani scored his debut goal last Wednesday at Lucas Moripe Stadium where he sent a thunderous strike past Matsatsantsa shot stopper Ronwen Williams before setting up Hendrick Somaeb for their second.

Ea Lla Koto promoted the young star to the first team from the club's development side after the Christmas break.

The coach concluded by saying his side is ready for the Nedbank Cup competition.

"We are actually preparing very well for the Nedbank Cup at the moment. The players are focused and working hard in training," Phiri said.

"We are on the right track getting ready for the competition. [The] AFCON break gave us enough time to get our house in order."
