Teko Modise goes AWOL

Johannesburg - Unsettled midfield genius Teko Modise could be heading for a major collision with Orlando Pirates after going AWOL, reports the Sowetan.

According to the Sowetan Pirates are unhappy with Modise's behaviour, which resulted in his missing out on Saturday night's 0-0 draw with Santos.

His disappearance has allegedly angered some of his team-mates, who want Modise to decide whether he still wants to play for Pirates.

There are reports that Modise wants out because he is no longer a regular player, with some suggesting he could be on his way to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Modise took the players and technical staff by surprise after leaving the camp on Friday after a call from his wife about a break-in at their house.

"After the call, Teko asked to be dropped off at his car at the hotel's parking lot because we were inside the team's luxury coach," said a player, who asked not to be named.

"We heard the wife was treated for shock at hospital. We were surprised Teko wanted to be dropped off at his car instead of asking our security to take him straight to the house.

"Later on Teko was talking on his cellphone. The last one was at 23:00 saying he was waiting for a relative to come and sleep over at the house.

"After midnight his phone was off. He rocked up at the camp on Saturday just after 14:00. Coach Ruud Krol felt it would be wrong to allow Teko to rejoin us after being away for a night.

"Some of us as players are not happy at all because it is like Teko is getting preferential treatment. We won't win the league as long as Teko is not focused.

"What triggered the whole thing is that he was selected for the Santos game but as a reserve and was clearly not happy with the coaches' decision to bench him."

Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza said: "I can only tell you what I know. regrettably he (Modise) absconded from camp over the weekend. I'm waiting for a report from the technical committee."
