Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau blames the the five week break in the PSL for derailing the Soweto side's title hopes.
Amakhosi have failed to pick up a victory since the break for the AFCON as they have played out to three stalemates which has seen their title chances go up in smoke.
"We were going well in December. The break then spoilt our rhythm and allowed other teams to regroup," he told SAPA.
"The three draws killed off any hope of winning the title. But we have done well under the coach during his first season and those augers well for next season."
The Glamour Boys face Mpumalanga Black Aces on Wednesday evening and Chiefs boss Vladimir Vermezovic has called for his charges to give it one last push as they look to finish second in the PSL standings.
"We cannot win the league but there is a chance of finishing second so we must play as hard as we can during the remaining three matches.
"There are also two cup competitions to play for in the coming months."
The former Spartak Trnava boss is pleased with the work he has done during his tenure so far and is now aiming to conquer Africa.
"I would like to see Chiefs conquer Africa. The facilities in South Africa are top class and PSL clubs well organised," he concluded.
