Swallows thump Pirates

2012-09-01 22:27

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates endured a miserable evening at the hands of Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night, succumbing 3-0 to lose their first Absa Premiership match of the season.

Bennett Chenene, Mpho Maleka and Katlego Mashego scored the goals for the Birds, who further underlined their credentials as genuine contenders for silverware this season with a clinical performance that coach Zeca Marques will be delighted with.

Both teams attacked strongly from the early stages, with Swallows forcing goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa into a good save on five minutes when a Lerato Chabangu free kick threatened to drift into the back of the net.

Two minutes later Oupa Manyisa provided a superb through-ball to put Sifiso Myeni in on goal, but the winger hesitated just long enough to allow Shere Lekgothoane to get back and make a goal-saving challenge.

Former Buccaneer Bennett Chenene should have opened the scoring in the 19th minute, only to blaze a volley off target, but just two minutes later he combined superbly with Siyabonga Nomvethe before stabbing a low shot into the net via the inside of the post to make it 1-0 to the Birds.

Just past the half hour mark Pirates through they had drawn level when a point-blank header from Collins Mbesuma was only half-saved by Mathibe, but referee Phillip Tinyani waved play-on. Television replays showed the ball hadn’t crossed the goal line.

The Birds were dealt a major blow at the same time when Nomvethe limped off after twisting his ankle, forcing coach Zeca Marques to replace his ace goal-scorer with substitute Mpho Maleka.

Yet the replacement got his name onto the score sheet six minutes into the second half, firing the ball into the corner of the net after a brilliant turn and pass in the ‘D’ of Pirates’ box from Chabangu; 2-0 Swallows.

Pirates responded by using all three substitutions around the hour mark, and Daine Klate – one of the trio withdrawn – had two great chances in the 58th minute but on both occasions he saw his efforts saved by Mathibe.

Any hope Bucs had of mounting a comeback were extinguished when another former player, Katlego Mashego, scored within seconds of coming on as a sub, coolly controlling the ball in the box before turning and stabbing home another nail in the home side’s coffin.

Its way too early for you Chiefs fan to be over the moon. This is normal for the team that is destined for trible. U forgot the history of soccer, just revisit your history book just last season and then you can judge.

It is time for Palacios to go and leave s in peace

  • Radie van den Berg - 2012-09-01 23:21

Im not a Pirates fan, but its way too early to write them off after 3 games. they started crap last season under Julio Leal and they still ended up winning another treble. My team, Sundowns, seems they don't want to win the league title year after year.

      mulalo.manyatshe - 2012-09-02 00:38

Palacios record is dismal in the Premer league. He is going to destroy all the good work done by Krol

Palacios n Tebogo are way past their sell by date.I hope after this failure they hav realised coaching is no pap n vleis n will stop interfering n undermining other coaches duties who will coach Pirates in the not so distant future.

  • marcus.ediasm - 2012-09-02 07:23

It just goes to prove correct some commentators views that last season's successes by Orlando Pirates was not due to Mr Augusto Palacios, but was due to the solid foundation laid by previous coaches.

that is a story for another day. You guys (the happy people) are just too sensitive to criticism. Accept defeat and think about your next game.

It was unfair of the SABC to flight the AVBOB funeral advert, Siyaduduza immediately after the Pirates vs Swallows game. What does it mean?

  • Fugeeliscious - 2012-09-03 07:30

Im a Khosi fan On Saturday's game didn't play the way they should be playing, they will blame the wind but they chances to score. We need goals not draws!!!! This your chance to be NO1. For the SWAI & PIE game, the Swai team new from the onset what they came for and they just that, by beating PIE!!!! They PIE relay on BENNIE they should stop that. They have good players like Jali who were scoring before Bennie came......
