Swallows storm to victory

Cape Town - Santos were 1-0 up before a late rally by Moroka Swallows at the Athlone Stadium on Friday night saw the visiting side securing a 3-1 victory.

The Peoples’ Team got off to a slightly more positive start, but with Swallows came back into the game for the latter stages of the half with the result that the first stanza was evenly contested.

The first chance of the game fell the way of the home side as they nearly took the lead with five minutes gone, Ricardo Skippers having to watch in dismay as his free kick crashed in the woodwork.

For their part, Swallows, with Siyabonga Nomvethe lively, tried to make inroads into the Santos half, but too often the home team’s defence stepped up and caught the Birds’ attackers off-sides.

There was a half chance for the visiting team after 24 minutes, but Oscar Machapa’s sweetly-timed effort flew a foot wide of goal.

Phikolethu Kefile then went close for the Peoples’ Team when his long range effort flew just over, and soon after the Birds’ goal was again under threat as Tyren Arendse picked up a loose ball and wasn’t too far off.

It took the home side five minuets of action to change the complexion of the game as Bheki Shabangu nodded a powerful header past Greg Etafia, after a pin-point cross from Johnny Armogam.

As the second stanza passed the midway point, Santos found themselves doing more and more defending.

The pressure paid dividends for the Birds when they equalised in the 72nd minute; Lefa
Tsutsulupa finding Tshepo Motsoeneng off his line from a flighted free kick.

Santos had half chances in attack, but paid the price for some weak defending which allowed Tsutsulupa to slash home a left-footed screamer.

The game was wrapped up in injury time when Bennett Chenene scored from a tight angle.
