Benoni - David Mathebula scored a free kick in each half to give Moroka Swallows a 2-0 win over relegation destined Jomo Cosmos in their PSL clash at the Sinaba Stadium on Tuesday night.
Swallows took the lead in the 26th minute via a Mathebula free kick. Siyabonga Nontshinga got into the referee’s book when he fouled Birds winger Bennett Chenene and Mathebula scored his eighth goal of the season when he sent the ball flying into the top right corner of the goal.
Except for two unthreatening free kicks from Mathebula, the first half proved to be a quiet period for both teams.
In the second half Swallows were reduced to shooting from range as the league’s joint leading goal scorer Siyabonga Nomvete hit a 30-yard shot over the bar in the 54th minute.
Mathebula then got his second goal of the match and ninth of the season, putting a free kick past Cosmos ‘keeper Abisai Shiningayamwe.
Lefa Tsutsulupa was unfairly challenged by Ezenkosi’s Malian right-back Ousmane Berthe, and from the resultant free kick Mathebula hit the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the Birds after 72 minutes.
The win for the men from Soweto lifts them up to third spot on the log, tied in second place with Orlando Pirates who drew their match with Mamelodi Sundowns tonight.
Bad news for Cosmos is that they still remain rooted to the bottom of the log with 13 points and ten matches remaining to turn things around.
