Swallows fly past Ajax

Dobsonville - Two goals in the final minutes at Dobsonville Stadium was enough to hand Moroka Swallows a 3-1 win over Ajax Cape Town, handing the visitors their first defeat of the Absa Premiership season.

After sustaining an injury during the SuperSport game, Sander Westerveld was forced to miss out on the match, allowing Sean Roberts to take over the reins in the box, while Travis Graham was handed his debut with the Urban Warriors.

Siyabonga Nomvethe, the man who scored a brace the last time the two teams met, tried to break the deadlock in the sixth minute but his shot went out at the far post.

It was a positive start for both teams, as each had their fare share of attacking plays, but the first caution of the game fell to Sibusiso Khumalo in the 16th minute after he brought down Graham.

Just before the half hour the goal scorer against SuperSport United, Terror Fanteni, tested Greg Etafia in goal but the shot-stopper was equal to it.

Both teams started the second half unchanged and it was Fanteni who once again found himself in the thick of things, as he was shown yellow for a late challenge on Lefa Tsutuslupa.

Bradley Grobler was introduced into the system, in place of Fanteni, when he was given 30 minutes to showcase his skills against his dad’s former club.

On the 69 minute mark Maarten Stekelenburg opted to change his players around as he brought in Keagon Dolly in place of Khama Billiat, seeing his line-up change more to a 4-4-2 instead of the 4-3-3 he started with.

The change of formation proved the right decision as the Urban Warriors broke the deadlock when Lebogang Manyama swung the ball into the top right corner of the net, 20 minutes from time.

Ajax’s lead was short lived after the Dube Bird’s capitalised on a set-piece handed to them by Hlatswayo and the substitute Katlego Mashego made no error in making it 1-1, 10 minutes later.

That equaliser seemed to give air into the Birds’ wings as they managed to pull another one out the hat when Nomvethe headed home a cross by Joseph Makhanya, two minutes from full time.

Grobler had a few attempts at goal but they proved to be null as Nomvethe continued to score against his favourite club, when he added a brace in the 90th minute to make the score line 3-1, and sending Ajax to their first defeat.
