Bloemfontein - SuperSport United ended their 2011/12 Absa Premiership campaign with a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at Botshabelo Stadium on Saturday afternoon, securing third place on the standings.
Matsatsantsa surged into an early two-goal lead thanks to strikes by Kermit Eramus and Sibusiso Zuma. Celtic pulled one back in the second half through Lennox Bacela.
Despite the loss, Phunya Sele Sele remain in the top half of the table and will play in next season’s MTN8.
SuperSport opened the scoring on 11 minutes, with Erasmus firing home a low shot from 20 yards out that had the beating of goalkeeper Thabani Stemmer.
Six minutes later Zuma made it 2-0, getting on the end of an attacking throw in from Erasmus before getting away a left-footed shot that made its way into the back of the net.
The hosts pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to play when Bacela got onto a pass from Lerato Manzini and put a low shot past United ‘keeper Ronwen Williams.
The loss could have resulted in Celtic being elbowed out of the top eight, but fortunately for them neither AmaZulu nor Ajax Cape Town were able to win their matches against Kaizer Chiefs and Black Leopards respectively.
