Atteridgeville - A dull performance from Mamelodi Sundowns in their first half against Moroka Swallows was quickly forgotten when a phenomenal 16 minutes of play in the second 45 saw the Brazilians score four goals.
Sundowns dismantled the Birds' defence in the second half of their Absa Premiership match played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening, winning 4-0.
While the first half saw both sides evenly matched and both with their fair share of chances on goal. The second half was all one-way traffic as the Brazilians' swift passing was too much for Gordon Igesund’s men to deal with.
If anything, the Birds had the better of the first half.
The first shot on goal went the way of Swallows in the 12th minute when Oscar Machapa drove a powerful shot goalwards from 25-yards out, but he saw his effort go narrowly wide of the target.
Nine minutes later and David Mathebula tested Wayne Sandilands with a superbly placed free-kick that had the keeper diving full stretch to his right to make a fingertip save.
Still, while the Birds may have enjoyed the first 45 minutes, the second was a nightmare they will quickly want to forget.
In a 16 minute period the Swallows defence seemed to go to sleep and Sundowns’ attackers took full advantage.
First, in the 50th minute Katlego Mphela showed his prowess in front of goal with a fine finish to give his side the lead. Seven minutes later and Modise doubled his side’s lead with a classy finish.
The goal of the evening was scored by Musa Nyatama in the 60th minute when his 25-yard thunderbolt found the top right-hand corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.
Mphela grabbed his second to conclude the goal rout after latching onto an accurate cross from Punch Masenamela to fire the ball home for 12-yards out, 4-0.
After taking a four goal lead Sundowns took the foot of the pedal and seemed content to just go through the motions knowing the three points were secure.
